AREK (Amiga Reverse Engineering Kit) is a free toolkit that lets an AI take a 1990s Amiga game apart, piece by piece, and build it again as a modern program. The rebuilt game plays like the original, moves smoothly on today's screens and can show more of the level than the old window did.
The first game is Alien Breed II. Its first two levels are playable here with your own copy of the game. Superfrog is next.
Recorded in an ordinary web browser, the same section of level 1 twice. No emulator, no Amiga: the game's own code, translated and running as part of the page.
Original window: the game's own picture, 50 frames a second on a 60 Hz display, recorded at 60 fps; here with the old-monitor look switched on.Wider view: more of the map around the player and the motion interpolated to the display's 60 Hz, recorded at 60 fps (a 120 Hz screen is not shown here).

Alien Breed II: The Horror Continues. Team17, 1993. A demo that ends after the second level.
The intro, the title and the first two levels: fight through the alien-infested base, collect keys and credits, buy weapons at the terminals and reach the exit.
Keyboard (arrows, Ctrl or Z to fire, M for the map, Space at a terminal) or a gamepad; one or two players.
E switches between the original picture and the wider, smoother view at any time.
You need your own disk images of the Amiga 500 version (disks 1 and 2 as .adf). Verified so far with the dumps that have been preserved (the Fairlight release, with and without trainer; the list). An original retail disk has not been verified yet: if you own one, please get in touch, that is the help I need most. The AGA version for the A1200 is not supported.
The page contains no game data: no graphics, levels, code listings or music. The code derived from the game is encrypted and unlocks only with your own disks, which never leave your computer.
Superfrog (Team17, 1993). Its rebuild is in verification against the original; it is not playable here yet. Two pictures from it, with the old-monitor look switched on:
The original window, as the game drew it.The wider view: more of the level in both directions.
Status, October 2026
Alien Breed II: intro, title and levels 1–2 playable, Original and Enhanced modes, one or two players. Measured against the original in an emulator (the published build on kit 0.8.4, level 1, four 30-second runs with random joystick input): 99.9 % of the pixels match, the sound chip writes match in 97–100 % of the frames, and the game state matches tick by tick for the whole run in one of the four; in the others small CPU timing differences make the runs drift apart after 1–3 seconds.
Why only two levels: the rebuild runs the whole game. The Enhanced view, though, is tuned and checked level by level: the wider window, the earlier activation of objects and the sound routing all depend on how each level is built, and levels 1 and 2 are the ones that are done. The later levels run, but I have not played them through myself yet and would rather not show them until they are finished.
Superfrog: in verification, not playable yet.
Not supported: the AGA version of Alien Breed II; original retail disks are not verified yet (see the FAQ).
Tested in: tested so far in Chromium and WebKit; more browsers after launch. Not tested on a phone yet.
